As early as the Han Dynasty, ancestors had integrated aesthetic wisdom into shell decoration to enrich their daily life. Archaeologists have unearthed shell‑inlaid artifacts from Han tombs in present‑day Dalian. For instance, the gilded bronze deer ornament with shell inlay, excavated in 1975 from the Western Han Dynasty, reflects the ancient craft tradition of utilizing marine resources.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Dalian’s shell carving techniques gradually matured. The mother‑of‑pearl inlay craft was widely applied to furniture and stationery decoration, reaching a pinnacle that perfectly combined artistic value with practicality.

In the late period of the Republic of China, artisans skilled in shell carving from Shandong and other provinces settled in Dalian. Integrating local traditions, they crafted small shell‑carved paintings, ornaments and three‑dimensional shell carvings using coastal shells. In 1958, veteran craftsmen led by Wang Bo created China’s first shell‑carved painting Rooster and Peony, based on ancient mother‑of‑pearl inlay techniques combined with traditional Chinese painting composition and relief carving skills.

In 1964, Dalian established China’s first professional shell carving factory — the Dalian Shell Carving Factory, which became an industry benchmark and took the lead in formulating industry standards. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Dalian shell carvings were exported worldwide via the Canton Fair, selling to more than 50 countries and regions.

In 1983, responding to the initiative of “bringing shell carvings down from the wall”, the Dalian Tourist Craft Factory was founded, developing new products such as inlaid shell paintings and decorative ornaments. In 1987, the “shell softening and forming” technique developed by Jin Ashan won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, greatly advancing shell carving craftsmanship. In 2020, “Dalian Shell Carving Craftsmanship” was included in the 6th batch of Liaoning Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Project List.

In modern inheritance, inheritance bases including the Jin Ashan Art Museum and Dalian Boyi Shell Carving Cultural and Creative Art Museum have been established. Cooperation programs with universities have been launched to offer professional courses. New products such as urban landscape decorations and cultural and creative items have been developed. For example, the work Dragon and Phoenix Auspicious Boat won the China Folk Art Mountain Flower Award in 2023. In 2025, Dalian shell carving was featured on CCTV’s 2025 Intangible Cultural Heritage Gala, showcasing the perfect integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation.

Applications of Dalian Shell Carving

Traditional Dalian shell carving products mainly include large‑scale shell‑carved paintings (featuring landscapes, flowers, birds and human figures) and three‑dimensional shell carving ornaments (such as Nine‑Dragon Wall and Dragon‑Phoenix Boat). In recent years, inheritors have actively promoted innovation, developing more than 200 new cultural and creative products in six categories. These include electronic products such as USB flash drives, bookmarks, name card boxes, digital photo frames and power banks, as well as daily necessities and jewelry such as chopsticks, wooden combs and necklaces. Through material integration, shell carving elements are combined with cloth, metal, wood, black pottery and other materials, creating excellent works such as the shell‑inlaid black pottery series Abundance Year after Year and The Great Wall.

Dalian shell carvings are often selected as high‑end urban gifts. Examples include the shell‑carved display plate Suoyuwan Stadium, desktop ornament Dalian International Conference Center, and Whale Dancing Brooch, which were presented as gifts at the Summer Davos Forum. The three‑dimensional shell carving Auspicious Golden Dragon Fish was collected by the chairperson of a relevant UN conference, and the craft fruit plate Prosperous Abundance was presented to the chairperson of the World Economic Forum.

Shell carving works are displayed for artistic decoration in high‑end hotels and state guesthouses. For example, a large white egret shell sculpture is exhibited at Beidaihe State Guesthouse. The lobby and guest rooms of Dalian Pan Pacific Hotel also display and hang shell‑carved boats and over a hundred shell‑carved paintings.

To promote craftsmanship inheritance, more than 70 intangible cultural heritage shell carving DIY training courses have been held, benefiting over 5,000 people. Professional shell carving courses in cooperation with universities are also planned. In terms of cultural tourism, shell carving culture is promoted through participation in intangible cultural heritage fairs such as “Bawei Nanshan”, sales of cultural and creative products at tourist attractions, and exhibitions at venues including the Dalian Boyi Shell Carving Cultural and Creative Art Museum, continuously expanding application scenarios.

Awards and Honors

In recent years, numerous shell‑carved paintings themed on myths, classical literary works and historical figures have been created, including traditional masterpieces such as Dragon and Phoenix Auspiciousness, Hundreds of Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix, Chang’e Flying to the Moon, The Seventh Fairies Descending to Earth and Su Xiaomei Teases the Groom Three Times. These works are well‑received by domestic and international guests, with many collected as precious treasures. A large number of outstanding works have been exhibited at international expos and won top awards. In national professional competitions, shell‑carved paintings from the Dalian Shell Carving Factory have repeatedly ranked among the best.

In 2023, the large‑scale shell carving work Dragon and Phoenix Auspicious Boat, created by Jin Ji, won the Excellent Folk Arts and Crafts Award at the 16th China Folk Art Mountain Flower Award, achieving a historic breakthrough

About us We are dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage of shell carving art.
